FAMOUS ARTISTValdis Bushs

Valdis Bushs was a Latvian painter, one of the boldest experimenters of the Soviet period in Latvian art. He lived and worked in Jurmala. Despite the pressure of official ideology, he gradually moved toward abstract and expressionistic styles.
Bushs began as a realist, but by the late 1950s, he was breaking down conventional forms — blurring contours, enlarging color areas, and abandoning “democratic” illusions. His landscapes — like “Autumn” and “By the Lake” — hover between figuration and abstraction: the forms are recognizable, but dissolved in color, like reflections on water. His still lifes rely on powerful color contrasts and bold, sweeping strokes. In his last works, Bushs reached near-total abstraction. His abstract compositions “breathe” landscape; one can sense horizons, skies, and water surfaces within them.

Bushs was a staunch nonconformist who refused to compromise his artistic vision.
