FAMOUS ARTISTBiruta Delle

Biruta Delle was a contemporary Latvian painter known for her expressive figurative art, focusing on the human subject, inner world, and form. Born in Riga, she graduated from the Latvian Academy of Arts.
For Delle, the human figure and face are her main means of expression. Her portraits are painted broadly, with unrestrained, large planes of color, conveying penetrating psychological depth. Delle does not strive for external likeness — she seeks the essence of a person, hidden emotions, and unspoken thoughts.

Her compositions often incorporate elements of Latvian folklore and mythology — ancient symbols, archetypal images, and motifs from folk songs (dainas). Her color palette is rich and contrasting, dominated by reds, ochres, and earth tones, which evoke a sense of warmth and primal strength.
Delle drew inexhaustible inspiration from Latvian folklore, once stating, “A single Latvian daina holds more meaning than a whole museum hall,” and that folk songs taught her “to see the human as part of nature, not just a figure on the canvas.”
