FAMOUS ARTISTNikolai Kull

Nikolai Kull was an Estonian painter and graphic artist, a vivid representative of National Romanticism and Expressionism in Estonian art of the first half of the twentieth century. Kull created emotionally charged landscapes and genre scenes reflecting the life of the Estonian countryside, the labour of its farmers, and the beauty of the native landscape.

His works are distinguished by a taut colour scheme, expressive draughtsmanship, and genuine dramatic force. Kull neither embellished reality nor lapsed into gloom — his art is filled with inner strength and dignity.

Nikolai Kull died tragically in the final months of the Second World War, which proved catastrophic for an entire generation of Estonian artists. A significant portion of his legacy was lost amid the chaos of wartime, and every surviving work is a reminder of a talent cut brutally short.
