FAMOUS ARTISTLeo Svemps

Leo Svemps was a Latvian painter, among the foremost masters of still life and landscape in 20th-century Latvian art. Born in the northern district of Latvia, at the Vecbabranis homestead.
Above all, Svemps was a virtuoso colorist. His still lifes astonish with the richness of their color relations despite their seemingly simple subjects. Every object — a vase, an apple, a loaf of bread — is painted with such care and affection that it acquires an almost symbolic significance. Svemps’s landscapes are filled with light and air, exuding a joy for life and an appreciation of nature.

In 1925, Svemps graduated from the law faculty at the University of Latvia and practiced law until 1940.
