Karin Luts was one of the most striking, independent, and powerful women artists in twentieth-century Estonia. Educated in Tallinn and Paris, she developed an unmistakable individual style early on, drawing on the influences of Expressionism, Cubism, and Fauvism. In 1944, fleeing the Soviet occupation, Luts emigrated to Sweden, where she continued an active creative career.

Her painting — forceful, large-format, expressive — is characterised by a bold palette, broadly generalised forms, and intense colour. Luts was unafraid of scale, drama, and open emotion. Nudes, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes in her hands always became an event, a declaration, an explosive release of energy on canvas.

In exile, Karin Luts became a symbol of “unconquered” Estonian art, continuing to create far from her homeland yet never forgetting it. Her large-format canvases of nudes were bold and provocative even by the standards of liberal Sweden of the time. Luts lived a long life and continued to work into deep old age, proving that creative energy knows no age.
