FAMOUS ARTISTEduards Kalnins

Eduards Kalnins was an outstanding Latvian painter, one of the most prominent representatives of the Latvian realist school. Born in Riga, he studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts under Vilhelms Purvitis, a graceful Latvian landscape artist who greatly influenced Kalnins’ further artistic path. Kalnins later became a professor at the Academy himself, teaching a new generation of Latvian artists.
Kalnins is first and foremost a painter of the Baltic Sea. His seascapes — such as “At a Distance,” “Calm,” “Baltic Regatta” — convey the striking beauty and poetry of the northern coastline. He had an exceptional sense for the mood of water and sky: the leaden heaviness of storm clouds, the shimmer of sunlight on the waves, the transparency of the morning mist. His restrained palette—built on silvery grays, bluish-greens, and ochre tones — perfectly evokes the Baltic region’s atmosphere. Major series like “Latvian Fishermen” and “On the Shore” are marked by monumental composition and a deep respect for the labor of ordinary people.

Kalnins was so dedicated to the maritime theme that he would go to sea with fishermen. Settling on the shore, he painted countless studies, still lifes with fishermen’s catches, boats on the beach, and the sandy Baltic coast.
