Rein Tammik was a distinctive Estonian painter whose work is characterised by inexhaustible energy, an expressive manner of painting, and a generous, life-affirming palette. Over the course of his long and prolific career, Tammik created landscapes, genre scenes, portraits, and abstract compositions brimming with movement, rhythm, and the sheer joy of being alive. Rein Tammik was a passionate traveller, and the impressions from each journey were instantly and unerringly reflected in his palette: after visits to southern countries — Italy, Spain, Greece — his colours grew hotter, more intense and saturated, filling with gold and terracotta. On returning to the Baltic coast, the palette would shift to silvery, pearly, and ashen tones. His paintings form a kind of “colour diary” from which one could literally reconstruct the itinerary of his travels.
