FAMOUS ARTISTRomans Suta

Romans Suta was a Latvian avant-garde artist, designer, art theorist, and one of the founders of Latvian modernism. Born in Latvia, he studied in Penza where he encountered Russian avant-garde, then lived and worked in Paris. Returning to Latvia, he became a central figure in the national art scene.
Suta was arguably the most radical Latvian artist of the early 20th century. His paintings synthesize cubism, constructivism, and art deco, creating an unmistakable, iconic style. Forms are geometric, colors pure and vibrant, compositions rhythmically precise.

Suta was not only an easel artist: he painted porcelain at the Riga Porcelain Factory, creating unique decorative plates, vases, and sets in a cubist style — now highly prized at auction. He also designed furniture, interiors, costumes, and worked in theater.
Suta’s creative partnership with artist Alexandra Belcova (his wife) produced some of the most productive work in Latvian art. Together, they decorated porcelain — Suta’s cubist forms combined with Belcova’s decorative finesse.
