FAMOUS ARTISTOjars Abols

Ojars Abols was a Latvian painter and graphic artist, recognized as one of the most subtle colorists in 20th-century Latvian art. Born in Riga, he graduated from the Latvian Academy of Arts. He worked predominantly in easel painting but was also acclaimed for his book illustrations and stage designs.
For Abols, color was the main instrument of expression. His landscapes are based on refined color harmonies — muted, pearly shades and soft transitions, as if nature were seen through a gentle haze. His still lifes are marked by decorative sophistication and poetry. Abols could see beauty in the simplest motifs: an old boat on the shore, a snow-covered yard, workers. Even his rare portraits bear this same delicacy — he painted people with the same tenderness and admiration he brought to nature.

Abols was one of the initiators of an informal group of Latvian artists who, in the 1960s, began cautiously experimenting with abstraction and expressionism, challenging the official doctrine of Socialist Realism. Their semi-underground “apartment exhibitions” became a key cultural phenomenon in Riga.
