Olev Subbi openly acknowledged that he drew inspiration from the work of the great European masters — Vermeer, Bonnard, Matisse, Vuillard. His interiors with vases of flowers, half-open windows, lace tablecloths, and dappled sunlight became among the most widely reproduced works of Estonian art — on postcards, posters, and even postage stamps. There is a joke in Estonia that it is impossible to find a home without at least one Subbi reproduction on the wall — and there is far more truth in that joke than irony.
