FAMOUS ARTISTJēkabs Pīguznis

Jēkabs Pīguznis was a Latvian painter specializing in landscapes and also a teacher. He graduated from the Latvian Academy of Arts, where he taught drawing from 1972 to 1986.
Pīguznis is the poet of the Latvian landscape. His works capture the characteristic features of Latvia’s environment — soft horizon lines, vast fields, silvery skies, and tranquil rivers. His style is free and flexible, with broad brushwork and a noble, subdued color palette. Pīguznis never sought showiness — his landscapes lack drama but are filled with quiet, profound love for his native land.

He skillfully conveyed what is hard to put into words — the spirit of place, its unique aura. In addition to landscapes, he painted still lifes and compositions, but landscape painting was always his primary artistic pursuit.
Over his career, Pīguznis held more than 25 solo exhibitions in Latvia and abroad.
