Description
In a bold, economical style dominated by vivid reds and yellows, the Latvian artist captures a gathering of women preparing for a traditional folk celebration. Skulme comes from one of Latvia’s most distinguished artistic families of the 20th century and trained at the art academies in Riga and St. Petersburg. Her politically engaged work draws on national themes, using allegories of past and present to reflect on the fate and origins of her people. Oil on cardboard.
